Description: This art installation offers a powerful exploration of the divergence in religious doctrine and the ensuing strife it engenders. Set within a spacious, square gallery, the environment is marked by a reflective dark floor that casts back the exhibit's components, enhancing their visual impact. Four substantial wooden boards, each eight by four feet and crafted from light oak, are situated as though being tugged from the gallery walls by an invisible force. These boards, graced with unique wood grain patterns indicative of age and tenacity, represent the varied doctrinal interpretations across religions.
From each board extends a metallic cable, their industrial coldness juxtaposed against the boards' organic warmth. With their unyielding lines, these cables traverse the room to converge at the gallery's core. Here, they unite, tethered to a solitary, suspended, long-stemmed red rose. The rose's deep crimson petals, velvety and seemingly luminous, contrast starkly with the steely cables, embodying the unadulterated beauty and sanctity of divine scripture.
Beneath the sublime floral emblem, a rectangle of bullet shell casings forms a somber tableau on the ground. The casings catch the light in a muted shimmer, creating a metallic tapestry that shapes a grave—measuring roughly six by three feet, it serves as a poignant reminder of the casualties of religious conflicts. This assortment of casings, from the tarnished to the lustrous, symbolizes the expended efforts and violence born from humanity's inclination to contort sacred words for personal gain, dominion, and control.
As viewers navigate the space, they are compelled to duck beneath the cables, an intentional design that introduces an element of discomfort and stress, echoing the tension and disquiet that often accompany religious discord. This physical interaction is a metaphor for the challenges and unease that doctrinal differences impose upon the faithful, prompting a personal and visceral engagement with the exhibit's overarching narrative.
